What is a “real book” anyway?

Every so often, someone on Twitter brings up the physical vs ebook “debate” again. And I am SO TIRED of it.

Every time, the physical book lovers’ replies drip with superiority, their disdain for ebooks and those who read them clear. Several people will declare their love for “real books” as if there is such a thing. As if ebooks and (shudder) audiobooks aren’t “real” books.

I learned to read when I was four years old, and I was reading full-length novels by the time I was seven. Growing up, I read every book in the house multiple times. I’m the type of person who will read the back of boxes and shampoo bottles if I have nothing else to read. Suffice to say I am a reader.

I’ve had to move house several times since becoming an adult, and I gotta say: moving physical books sucks big time. I have boxes and boxes of books. I learned to pack them into smaller boxes so they don’t break backs.

I used to carry a physical book (or two) everywhere I went and my shoulders didn’t thank me for the heavy purse.

In the past few years, I’ve developed problems with my hands. I don’t know what it is, but my knuckles and wrists get very sore very easily. The doctor says it’s not carpal tunnel syndrome, but didn’t say what it is. Because of…
