My first kneejerk reflex is to say: I don’t know. But that’s not entirely honest. I grew up in evangelical churches, so I do know how we are taught to think and act. I used to believe the party line, that anything other than straight cis “normal” is sinful and they’re all going to Hell.
I have known some amazing, kind, loving pastors who toed this party line. We say we love one another, we love the world, and then we condemn people for who they are. I think some are deluded, and truly believe that it is a choice, but they are willfully turning a blind eye to the facts. Ignorance is not a fault unless you purposely refuse to learn anything.
Jesus said to love everyone, even your enemies, and that was a revolutionary idea then, and is still a revolutionary idea now. Even those who call themselves by His Name have trouble following that command.
But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people. 1 Peter 2:9 KJV
If Christians could get our heads out of our asses long enough, maybe we’d see how much we have in common.
But why do we focus on this one thing while discarding many Levitican laws that we don’t feel like following anymore? Maybe because it’s easy for most Christians to abstain from “gay stuff” while bacon just tastes so good, man.
I think it’s good old fashioned hypocrisy.
