It has become a cliché in our time,
And one so many won’t even discuss:
To search for who you are seems ludicrous,
Ridiculous, and even asinine.
“Just be yourself; it’s not hard to define,
And keep it simple; don’t make such a fuss.”
As if your spirit is superfluous;
As if knowing yourself is not benign.
It took me thirty years and more to learn,
And I’m still learning who I really am;
So many creeds from childhood overturn.
Now I believe I’m more, and not less than
When I thought I knew all there was to know,
For now I truly can begin to grow.
